The oldest foundations on the Wasatch Front, where two rivers meet.
The Ogden and Weber rivers converge here, and the low ground near either carries shallow groundwater and softer alluvial deposits.
Some of Utah's oldest continuously occupied housing — 1890s through the 1930s around 25th Street and the east bench. Stone and unreinforced masonry foundations are common, and many have been patched repeatedly over a century.
A hundred years of partial repairs is its own problem. Different mortars, different concrete, different eras of underpinning all in one wall means the assembly moves unevenly. Assessment here is about reading what previous work did, not just what the soil is doing.
